PPF care and lifespan: washing, the first weeks and what to avoid

The first 48 hours and the first week

Water is used under the film during installation and the adhesive reaches full bond only as it dries. For the first 48 hours do not wash the car and keep it out of the rain if you can. During the first week do not use a pressure washer, do not slam doors and do not pick at the film edges with your nails. In winter the film dries more slowly: many installers keep the car in a warm room for a day in the cold season.

In the first weeks you may see small water pockets or a light haze under the film. That is installation fluid evaporating through the film on its own, usually within 2–4 weeks, faster in warm weather. Do not press the bubbles out yourself. If a bubble is still there after a month, or an edge lifts, go back to the installer: that is a warranty matter.

How to wash

• Wash with the two bucket method or at a touchless wash. A soft microfibre mitt and a pH neutral car shampoo.
• With a pressure washer keep the nozzle at least 30–50 cm away and do not aim the jet straight at the film edges. Edges are where film lets go.
• Brush washes are not forbidden, but sand in the brushes leaves swirls in film too. The self-healing top coat smooths fine scratches out in warmth; deeper ones stay.
• Remove bird droppings, insects and tree sap within days, not weeks. The top coat resists them, but not indefinitely.
• Dry with a soft microfibre towel or an air blower; do not rub the surface dry.

What not to use

Abrasive polishing compounds, solvents, strong degreasers, a machine polisher with a hard pad and waxes that contain abrasives. Use clay carefully and with plenty of lubricant. On matte film do not use anything that adds gloss: it leaves patches. Ordinary wax and spray ceramics suit gloss film; matte film takes only products made for matte.

Caring for the surface over the years

The hydrophobic top coat wears over the years and water stops beading as well. It can be restored with a ceramic spray made for PPF or a proper ceramic coating. The nano-glass top coat on STEK DYNOshield keeps its water beading longer than ordinary films, and the STEK Final Coat ceramic applied on DYNOshield extends the film warranty by two years. Gloss film can be lightly polished if the surface dulls, but that is a job for the installer, not the driveway.

Have the installer look the car over once a year: edges, corners and the spots where the film has taken stone hits. Replacing the film on one panel is cheap next to a paint repair.

How long the film lasts

A quality TPU film lasts ten years or more with proper care. STEK premium films carry a warranty of up to 10 years against yellowing and cracking. What shortens the life of a film is sitting unwashed in the sun, salt left on for weeks in winter, and a pressure washer aimed at the edges. It is time to replace the film when it has started to yellow, crack or lift at the edges, or when there are so many stone hits that the surface no longer heals. Salt and grit are routine work for film, not a threat. Wash the salt off regularly, do not scrape ice off the film with a hard scraper, and let the film warm up during a thaw before you pressure wash it. The plastic tip of a snow brush scratches clear coat; on film it usually does not, and the fine marks are smoothed out by the self-healing layer in spring.
