Visible light and solar rejection

What do these metrics mean?

Each metric answers a different question. For heat rejection, start with TSER and SHGC.

VLT

Visible light transmission. A higher value means a brighter film and more visible light entering the cabin.

Exterior VLR

The share of visible light reflected from the exterior side.

Interior VLR

The share of visible light reflected back toward the cabin.

Solar transmittance

The share of solar energy passing directly through the glass and film. Lower is better.

Solar reflectance

The share of solar energy reflected away.

Solar absorptance

The share of solar energy absorbed by the film and glass.

IRER 780 to 2500 nm

Energy rejected across a broad infrared range. It is broader than SIRR measured at one wavelength or a narrow range.

SIRR 900 to 1000 nm

Infrared rejection across a narrow wavelength range. It must not be treated as total heat rejection.

SIRR 1400 nm

Infrared rejection at one wavelength. This value is reported only in the plus family TDS documents.

UV rejection

The share of ultraviolet radiation rejected. Most products report very similar values.

TSER

Total solar energy rejected. This is the primary metric when the question is solar and heat rejection.

SHGC

The share of solar heat admitted into the cabin. A lower value means less solar heat gain.

Shading coefficient

Heat gain through the filmed glass relative to reference glass. Lower is better, but several TDS values need verification.

Glare reduction

How much the film reduces glare from visible light. Darker films usually report a higher value.

Thickness

Film thickness as reported in the TDS. Units and included layers are not always directly comparable.

How to compare the data

TDS values use STEK Automotive internal test methods. The documents do not identify the glass type, instrument or complete test setup.

The values are therefore best suited to comparison within the STEK dataset. Competitor figures require the same test method before comparison.

Standalone TDS documents are the primary source for technical values. Rounded or conflicting sales-deck figures are not used for ranking.

Suspect fields are visibly flagged and excluded from winner calculations for that metric.
