PPF, ceramic coating or wax: what each one protects against

Three layers, three different jobs

The easiest way to tell them apart is thickness. Wax is a layer a few tenths of a micrometre thick that adds gloss and water beading for a few weeks. A ceramic coating is a hard silica based layer 1–3 micrometres thick that bonds chemically to the clear coat and lasts 2–5 years. Protection film is a 150–200 micrometre polyurethane layer that physically absorbs impacts and scratches and lasts ten years.

Everything else follows from that thickness. A stone flying at the bumper does not care how hydrophobic the surface is. Ceramic and wax do not stop stone chips or wash brush scratches because they were never made to. Film does.

Comparison table

When ceramic is enough

If the car mostly lives in the city, sees little highway and the main concern is easy washing and gloss, a ceramic coating is a sensible choice. It keeps the paint clean, protects against UV and chemicals and makes washing quick. Ceramic does not make a car scratch proof, although advertising sometimes says so: the surface is harder than clear coat, but a grain of sand in a wash brush still leaves a mark.

When you need film

If the car is new and you want it to stay new, if you drive a lot on highways or gravel, if the paint is expensive to repair (matte, three-stage pearl, red), or if you plan to sell the car later at a good price, the answer is film. A front package covers where most stone chips land. Full coverage also takes in the doors and rear, where parking scratches and gravel thrown up by the wheels arrive. Why many people do both

Film and ceramic do not compete, they complement each other. A ceramic layer can go on top of film to keep its surface hydrophobic longer and make washing easier. STEK DYNOshield already has a nano-glass top coat built in, so a separate ceramic is not strictly needed; adding the STEK Final Coat ceramic layer on top extends the film warranty by two years. The common combination is a front package in film and the rest of the car in ceramic: protection where the impacts land and easy care everywhere else.

What none of them does

No layer protects against dents, collisions, deep key scratches or bird droppings left for weeks. Protection film makes the repair cheaper: the film on the damaged panel is replaced and the paint stays intact. With ceramic and wax it is the paint that gets repaired.

How each layer ages

Wax washes off: after three to five washes the gloss is gone and it needs reapplying. Ceramic wears slowly and quietly. Water starts to sit on the surface, dirt sticks more, and around the third year so little of the coating is left that the surface needs polishing and a new layer. Film ages visibly and therefore honestly: stone hits leave marks in the film rather than the paint, the top coat smooths fine scratches, and after ten years you take the film off and the paint underneath is the same as on the day of installation.

Estonian conditions

Estonian roads are a grateful market for film. Gravel roads, winter grit and salt, spring highways after the snow melts and the summer insect season on the motorway add a fresh layer of small hits to the front every year. Ceramic makes washing easier here but does not change the number of stone chips. Film does. If you drive more than 20 000 kilometres a year or live at the end of a gravel road, front protection is practically an unavoidable cost that you pay either through the film or through the paint shop.
